Dental fissure sealant treatment is a preventive measure to protect teeth from decay. It involves the application of a thin plastic coating to the crevices and tiny indentations that occur naturally on the surface of the teeth, creating a protective seal. In addition to preventing bacteria from getting into the grooves in the teeth and causing decay, the sealant also prevents food and saliva from getting in. The process is usually fast and simple. It takes only a few minutes for each tooth and is entirely pain-free. Studies have found that sealants are highly effective in preventing dental caries in pits and fissures of teeth when applied by trained operators. Sealants should be positioned on pits and fissures of permanent teeth as soon as they erupt, usually between 6 and 14 years of age. Even with the sealant in place, it is still essential to maintain good oral hygiene and brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily to prevent decay.
