Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays are restorative treatments for larger cavities in teeth. An inlay fits within the tooth’s cusps, while an Onlay covers the tooth’s cusp and extends over one or more of the chewing surfaces. Inlays and Onlays are made from either composite resin or porcelain, and they are considered to be more conservative treatments compared to dental crowns. Inlays are used for larger cavities, while crowns are more aggressive and cover the entire biting surface of the tooth and the tooth structure above the gum line. An Onlay is a less aggressive restoration than a crown. It is essential to consider the patient’s oral health and financial resources when deciding on the restoration needed, as some treatments, such as crowns, may be more costly than others.
