Scaling and root planning is a type of dental procedure that is used to treat periodontal disease. It involves removing plaque, calculus, and bacteria from the teeth and below the gum line. The procedure involves using specialized instruments to remove the calculus and bacteria from the tooth surface and roots. In addition, the dentist may use specialized ultrasonic devices to help remove plaque and bacteria from the areas around the roots. Once the area has been thoroughly cleaned, the dentist may apply antibiotics to the area to help prevent further infection. After this, the area is smoothed to help prevent more bacteria from gathering and from preventing other periodontal diseases.
